The short version is this: use 304 when you need corrosion resistance in normal environments, including food contact, indoor moisture, mild chemicals, and general outdoor use in non-coastal areas. Machining 304 Stainless
304 is machinable, but it behaves differently from aluminum or mild steel. The main challenge is work hardening. If your cutting tool dwells or runs too slowly, the surface hardens and makes subsequent passes more difficult. The fix is to keep cutting and not let the tool rub rather than cut.
304 also generates significant heat at the cutting zone, so use cutting fluid and make sure chips are evacuating cleanly. Slower surface speeds and higher feeds work better than the aggressive high-speed approach that works on aluminum.
