The reason this matters: two bars of "A36 steel" aren't identical down to the atom. Every production run has some natural variation in chemistry and strength within the allowed spec range. The mill cert tells you exactly where your specific piece landed within that range, not just what grade it's labeled as.

Heat number. This is the single most important number on the page. It's a unique identifier tied to that specific production batch, and it should match a stamp or tag on the actual material you received. If the heat number on your cert doesn't match what's on your material, the cert is meaningless to you, it's proof for a different piece of steel.

Grade and specification. This lists the material grade (A36, 1045, 304, etc.) and which ASTM, ASME, or other standard it's certified to meet. Check that this matches what you actually ordered, not just something similar.

Chemical composition. A table listing percentages of each element, carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and others depending on the grade. Every element has an allowed range defined by the specification. What you're checking here is simple: does every number fall inside the allowed range for that grade? A number outside the range means the material technically doesn't meet the spec it's being sold under.

Mechanical properties. This section shows the results of physical testing, usually yield strength, tensile strength, elongation (a measure of ductility), and sometimes hardness. Same principle as chemistry: check that each result meets or exceeds the minimum required by the specification.

Mill or lab identification and signature. A legitimate mill cert identifies which facility produced and tested the material, and it's typically signed or stamped by a quality control representative. This is what makes the document a real certification rather than just a data sheet someone typed up.

How to actually check one, step by step

  1. Match the heat number. Find the heat number on the cert, then find the corresponding stamp or tag on your physical material. They need to match exactly.

  2. Confirm the grade matches your order. Don't just glance at it, make sure the exact grade and spec (like "ASTM A36" or "AISI 1045") matches what you ordered, not a close relative.

  3. Scan the chemistry table for anything outside spec. You don't need to memorize every allowable range, most certs will show the spec's allowed range right next to the actual result, so it's usually a fast visual check rather than a lookup.

  4. Check yield and tensile strength against the minimum required. These numbers should meet or exceed the spec's stated minimum. Higher than the minimum is normal and fine, lower means something is wrong.

  5. Confirm there's an authorized signature or stamp. A cert with no identifiable mill, lab, or signature is a weak document even if the numbers look right.

Common red flags worth knowing

A cert with no heat number, or a heat number that doesn't match your material. This is the most common and most serious issue. Without a matching heat number, you have no way to actually connect the paperwork to the metal in front of you.

Rounded, suspiciously clean numbers across the board. Real test results have natural variation, values that are all suspiciously round or identical across multiple properties can be a sign of a fabricated or generic cert rather than an actual test result.

A distributor summary sheet presented as a mill cert. Some suppliers provide their own paperwork that restates general grade specifications rather than the original mill's actual test results for that specific heat. This isn't necessarily dishonest, but it's not the same thing as a true mill cert, and it doesn't give you the same traceability.

Missing signature or facility identification. A legitimate cert names the producing mill and is signed or stamped by an authorized party. A generic, unsigned printout is worth questioning.

Why this matters more than it seems like it should

For a lot of general fabrication work, small deviations in chemistry or strength within spec won't make or break your project. But mill certs matter for a few real reasons beyond just paperwork:

Traceability if something fails. If a part fails in the field, a mill cert lets you trace it back to the exact heat it came from, which matters for liability, warranty claims, and figuring out whether it was a material issue or something else.

Code compliance. Structural, pressure vessel, and certain regulated applications often require documented material certification as part of code compliance, not having one can be a real problem during inspection, not just a nice-to-have.

Confidence in what you're actually building with. Especially when buying remnants or from a newer supplier, a real mill cert is your proof that "certified material" isn't just a marketing phrase.
