What Is 4140 Steel?
4140 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, often called chromoly steel. The 41 in the designation indicates it's a chromium-molybdenum alloy, and the 40 indicates approximately 0.40% carbon content. That combination gives 4140 a balance of properties you don't get from plain carbon steel.
Compared to a standard carbon steel like A36 or 1018, 4140 has significantly higher strength and hardness potential, better toughness, and improved fatigue resistance. It also responds well to heat treatment, which means you can push its mechanical properties significantly higher when your application requires it.
In the annealed or pre-hardened condition, 4140 machines reasonably well. In the fully hardened condition, it's much harder to work with, so most machinists and fabricators prefer to do their primary machining in the annealed state before hardening.
What Is 4140 Steel Used For?
4140 shows up in applications that need strength, toughness, and durability. Some of the most common include:
Shafts and axles are one of the most common applications. 4140 handles the torsional stress and fatigue loading that shafts see in service better than most steels at a similar price point.
Gears and sprockets take advantage of 4140's ability to be case hardened for a hard, wear-resistant surface while maintaining a tough core.
Tooling and fixtures use 4140 for its combination of machinability in the annealed state and strength after heat treatment.

4140 vs Other Common Steels
It helps to understand where 4140 sits relative to the steels you're probably already familiar with.
4140 vs A36: A36 is a mild structural steel with much lower strength and hardness than 4140. A36 is the right choice for general structural work where machinability and weldability are the priorities. 4140 is the right choice when you need higher strength, fatigue resistance, or the ability to heat treat.
4140 vs 1018: 1018 is a low-carbon steel that machines exceptionally well and welds easily. It's a great choice for parts that don't see high stress. 4140 is significantly stronger and tougher, making it the better choice for load-bearing or high-stress components.
4140 vs 4340: 4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel that is stronger and tougher than 4140, but also more expensive and harder to machine. For most applications 4140 is sufficient. 4340 is used when extreme toughness and strength are required, often in aerospace and high-performance applications.
A Note on Heat Treatment
One of the main reasons engineers specify 4140 is its heat treatability. In the annealed condition it machines well and is easy to work with. After heat treatment it can reach hardness levels of 54 to 59 HRC depending on the process and section size.
If you're ordering 4140 for a heat-treated application, make sure you're accounting for the dimensional changes that happen during hardening and tempering. Most shops leave extra stock for post-heat-treat grinding to hit final dimensions.
If you need 4140 in a pre-hardened condition, look for material specified as pre-hardened to a specific hardness range, typically around 28 to 34 HRC, which gives you improved strength while remaining machinable.
